FAQ About Upgrading Your Satellite Dish

If you are having trouble with your old satellite dish or simply want to benefit from a better signal, you may need an upgrade. Seeing as there is not a lot of information available online about satellite upgrades, we thought we would answer some of your most frequently asked questions in this post.

If you are having problems with your satellite signal, you may not need to fork out for a new dish. Your existing dish may simply need re-positioning.

Why do I need to upgrade my satellite dish?

If you have an old satellite dish and would like to benefit from HD satellite channels, you may be required to upgrade your dish. It is best to contact your provider and ask them. If you do need to have your satellite dish replaced, make sure you get a reputable satellite installation company like ADS Digital to do the work for you!

Another reason you may need to upgrade your satellite dish is if it has been damaged by bad weather. A damaged satellite dish may be unable to receive signals properly, which may prevent you from being able to watch your favourite channels. If you are having problems with your satellite dish, it is worth having it looked at first, because it may simply need re-positioning, rather than replacing, which will save you a lot of money.

Do you need a HD specific satellite dish for a HD TV?

Most providers will simply supply you with a new box if you want access to HD channels, rather than requiring you to upgrade your satellite dish. Check with your provider to be sure. If you are a Sky+ customer and want Sky+HD you will be sent a new box. All you have to do is unplug your old box, plug in the new box and activate the viewing card.

I do not want multiple satellite dishes on my property, is there an upgrade solution?

Yes there is! If you own a block of flats or apartments and do not want your tenants installing multiple satellite dishes, you may want to consider installing an integrated reception system. This will be much more subtle in terms of aesthetics and will allow each of your tenants to access their desired satellite channels.

What are the different sizes of satellite dishes available?

Satellite dishes are typically available in three different sizes. When upgrading your satellite dish you should remember that the larger the dish size, the narrow the focal angle is. It is also important to take your geographical location into consideration. 50cm and 60cm satellite dishes work anywhere in the UK, however mini dishes (53cm) are best used in geographical locations south of Leeds.

What are the best satellite dish materials?

Satellite dishes can be made out of a variety of materials, each which have their advantages and disadvantages. When upgrading your satellite dish, the material it is made from may be something you want to enquire about. Most satellite dishes are made out of aluminum, plastic, mesh and steel.

Plastic and mesh satellite dishes are the most expensive type, however they tend to last the longest. Steel dishes are the least expensive, but are the most likely to rush if they are not protected from the elements.

Can I choose the colour of my satellite dish when I upgrade?

Many people do not like the grey colour of most satellite dishes; however colour should not really influence your decision to upgrade your satellite dish. If you really dislike the colour of your dish, you could always paint it. Just make sure that you do not paint the LNB.
